Creative writing is not something that is done merely at schools. Parents should always encourage their kids to write, irrespective of whether it is a part of their lessons or not.

Creative writing helps kids in more ways than one. They learn to express their thoughts. Their communication skills and vocabulary improves. They enter the world imagination and creativity. Thus, it is vital for parents to motivate their kids to write.

A fun activity

The first step is to remove the perception from your kid’s mind that writing always has to do with schoolwork. Kids tend to associate books and writings with school and thus do not like the idea of spending their free time doing something that involves their things.

You need to make your kids realize the fun they can have with writing. For instance, let’s say that your kid loves to watch a particular cartoon. Plant the seeds of story writing in his mind via his favorite cartoon character. As him to think of an account for the role, what he would like the character to do, how would the character deal with a particular situation and how the character would interact with others.

This will encourage your kid to unleash his imagination. He will start thinking about the things he can make the character do. He will put himself in the shoes of the character and then decide the next step.

All this will urge him to write down whatever he is thinking. Once he is done, you can read the thing over and ask questions about the missing parts which will motivate your kid to be observant. Find the details missing in his story and encourage him to think about them.

The right writing prompt with examples – usually, all that is required is a suitable writing prompt for the kid to develop an interest in writing. Therefore, some interesting and creative prompts will do the trick. The prompts should be related to something that your kid loves.

Let us take a look at a few examples:

1. Would you want to live on the moon? Why?
2. What would you do if you meet your favorite cartoon character?
3. What would you do if you find yourself in the story of your favorite cartoon?
4. What will make your birthday party enjoyable?
5. Do you love your room? Why?

These are some prompts that relate to the kids. It all depends on what your kid is interested in.

Do not over burden children

It is important that the children do not feel overwhelmed with writing. He should view it as a fun activity instead of studying and homework.
Therefore, encourage your kid to write whatever he feels like, as he wants. Let his writing take any direction he desires. You can correct his grammar later. The first step is to make him love writing. Once he does start enjoying it, he will be motivated to improve it on his own. Therefore, do not try to restrict his creative flow.
