Recognizing the alphabets is the first step in the education of a child. Once he is able to identify the letters, forming words becomes an attainable feat for him. It is preferable if the child learns to recognize the letters before he starts school.
Parents often tend to be confused about the right way to go through with the whole process. Before elaborating on how the child should be taught, we feel it prudent to mention a couple of essential factors.
For one thing, you need to get the child to be interested in the lesson. Children tend to get distracted easily. If your kid does not pay attention to the task at hand, your endeavor will prove to be futile. Therefore, make sure that you find a way to pique his interest.
It is equally vital that you do not hasten things up. Every kid takes his own time to learn. Rushing into words will not be beneficial. Go slow and ensure that you give the child adequate time to learn. If you fail to do so, he will be put off with the whole process, and it would become impossible for you to teach him the letters.
Teaching a kid to identify the letters
One at a time
You need to teach him one letter at a time. Select a letter and show it to him in various shapes and sizes. Charts, coloring books, and play dough can be used for the purpose. Once the child starts identifying the upper case, teach him the lowercase of the letter before you proceed to the next one.
Move on to the next letter only once you are sure that the kid can recognize the first letter.
Sounds
Children learn what they hear quickly. Therefore, get the kid acquainted with the sound of the letter you are working on. This will ensure that the child picks up on both, the sound and the shape of the letter simultaneously.
The kid will then find it easier to retain the alphabet. Therefore, when you are trying to teach a kid the letters, make sure that you say them out loud and continue repeating them as the kid traces them.
Printouts
Help the kid in identifying the letters by picking up newspapers or magazines and pointing out the letter. If your kid gets it right, make sure that you reward him. This will motivate him to learn faster.
Upper and lower case
Teaching alphabets can be quite fun especially when you try to explain to them the uppercase and the lowercase. You can use alphabet charts for the purpose. The letters can also be copied from a paper. If you repeat the letters several times, the kid will recall and recognize them at a rapid pace.
Make it fun for the kids
The kid should not be bored with the whole thing. Thus, you need to think of some creative ways to get the child to recognize the letters. This will enhance his learning speed and also ensure that he retains what he learns.
