The majority of human beings are right-handed. In fact, less than 20% of the world’s population is left-handed. Statistically, there are twice as many male left-handed people as there are females. Researchers have also found that left-handed people are more likely to have allergies, migraines and have difficulty sleeping. “Sinistrophobia” is a fear of left-handed people. Psychologists are not sure why even such a fear exists at all. Many famous people are left-handed such as Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Jimi Hendrix. In fact, four out of the most recent ten US presidents were left-handed. Some manufacturers build left-handed versions of things, such as can openers, scissors and pens for the benefit of left-handed users. However, these items are rare and most left-handed people usually have little choice but to get used to using articles designed for right-handed people. Sometimes this is a very significant problem, for example, many rifles discharge the hot shells of expended rounds from the right of the weapon. So a left-handed soldier would have to learn how to handle such a rifle with his/her non-master hand acting as the master hand. Even rarer than left-handed people are ambidextrous people who can use either hand equally well. They make up about 1% of the world’s population.
