Communicating with kids is a whole lot of fun. It is also quite beneficial. Young children are thirsty for information. Their learning ability is on its peak, and thus they absorb information at every available opportunity. Daily interactions help them to learn new things.

The importance of conversing with children

Interactive conversations enable a child to enhance his vocabulary. Indulging in activities such as reading, playing word games and singing also helps develop communication skills in children.

Parents are often confused about how much their child should be able to speak by the time he reaches a certain age. Should he know more? Is he lagging behind the children of his age? Is there a problem? Does he need help?

These are some of the questions, parents; especially first-timers tend to struggle with. Every child is different. Some start to speak coherently at an early age while others require more time.

The vocabulary

By the age of three years, the vocabulary of a kid usually constitutes more than 200 words. At this age, children can string sentences together. They start to speak clearly and understand what they are being told better.

Indeed, by three years of age, the kid might begin counting objects correctly, start telling stories and speak his name.

Some common words that the toddler will likely know by the time he reaches three years of age include

  • Bath
  • Hat
  • Dog
  • Shoe
  • Ball
  • Kiss
  • Nose
  • Cookie
  • Book
  • Baby
  • Thank you
  • His name

These are merely a few examples. It also depends on how the parents converse with the kid. The baby is likely to pick up on the words that his parents speak a lot.

How to improve communication skills

What can you do to enhance the communication skills and vocabulary of your little one? Actually, there is a lot that is in your hands. You are the primary source of information for the kid, and thus you can play a pivotal role in his learning phase.

Make it a point to interact with him daily. You need to talk to him about what he did throughout the day and his plans for tomorrow. Encourage him to speak while using simple words that he would be able to understand and pick up on. Avoid using complicated words that your kid would not be able to pronounce at that early an age.

Make-believe games are another productive option in improving communication skills in your kid. Read him a book he likes multiple times encourage the kid to join in by voicing out the words he knows. Pretend reading is a good game wherein the child reads a book to you.

Children witness remarkable growth in their language skills between 2 and three years of age.  By two years of age, children develop the ability to understand directions and follow them. They can speak about 50 words or so. By three years of age, their vocabulary increases significantly.

It is vital that during this period, parents encourage their children to learn new words and interact with them daily.
